They say it's easier to fool someone than to convince someone they have been fooled...
Well, I am here to admit that I was fooled.
I trusted a label and believed it was safe. I was wrong, and it cost me.
The label I trusted?
"USDA Organic"
When I started making our Dulce de Donke Skincare, I made it my goal to source the best, safest ingredients for our products. Of course, that meant that I would use only organic ingredients from the USA whenever possible.
Since real beeswax is one of the ingredients in some of our products, I searched until I found "USDA Organic" beeswax, "Origin: USA."
I paid extra for the organic beeswax from the USA. It was worth it to me to not buy the questionable "USDA Organic" beeswax that was from China.
Everything was fine, until, one day, it wasn't.
My order of "USDA Organic" USA beeswax smelled off.... not sweet, like beeswax should. This beeswax smelled like...smoke.
My supplier told me the bees in Africa were more aggressive, and they had to use more smoke.
I corrected them, "I only ordered the beeswax from the USA."
After more email exchanges, they admitted that "USDA Organic: Origin USA" only means that it has to be PROCESSED here in the USA, but that it can be from ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.
And, that the "Processor" (meaning, the company that puts it in jars, or labels it, or bags it and boxes it) is the one that has to have their "USDA Organic" cerification.
Not the farmer.
Not the beekeeper.
Not the actual honey, or beeswax.
American Beekeepers are now suing the USDA over these "USDA organic honey imports".

Bees aren't kept in by electric fences. Bees can fly 5-6 miles to collect pollen. In order to be USDA organic certified, each hive would have to be placed in an area where every farm, road, and yard is certified organic, never sprayed for miles around.
“As a result of the challenges of finding enough land to satisfy this requirement, US beekeepers have effectively been excluded from producing certified organic honey,” said the study’s co-author Margarita López-Uribe.
“Consumers are willing to pay 20 to 30% more for organic certified honey than nonorganic certified honey,” said Scott McArt, associate professor of entomology... “If organic honey was possible to produce in the continental US, it would open up a huge market for our country’s beekeepers, who are really struggling right now.”
So, when you buy "USDA Organic" honey or beeswax? It's a good bet it's NOT made in the USA. And if it claims that it is? It's just been "processed" here at an "organic" certified facility.
